Food Porn Friday – Episode 10: The Sausage

It’s episode ten, traditionally the point in a series where things really start to hot up. So I thought I’d bring back a breakfast classic – the sausage.

Sausage sandwiches are my number one hangover cure. Especially with a fried egg. It’s a solid choice, because the cheaper it is the better – any greasy spoon will knock this one out of the park, and I’m also a diehard fan of the Sausage and Egg McMuffin.

This recipe takes the sausage sandwich to the next level:

Take a whole sourdough baguette, pull out the middle, fill it with eggs, cream and sausage, and cook for half an hour. Slice and serve. The perfect brunch centrepiece.

Sausages also work great in the hot, one-pot comfort food breakfast staple: the casserole. This one is apparently only 209 calories per serving, which I reckon means you can eat at leat four…

This sounds really tasty and great to make at any time of the day. Amy and I often find it gets to the end of the week and all we have left in the house is a couple of eggs, some stale bread and half a bag of frozen sausages – and now we have a solution!

The great thing about sausage is it comes in a variety of forms. One of its less popular incarnations is the Black Pudding, but it’s such an essential part of English Brunch Heritage that it seems a shame to miss it out… especially being the northerner I am! I’m a recent convert to Black Pudding, and you really do just have to think of it as a rich sausage…

If you’re gonna try it, do it Jamie Oliver style – with sweet apple to bring out the black pudding’s flavour, served on a warm, toasty crumpet.

Then, there’s the sausage’s favourite Spanish cousin, Chorizo. One of our personal brunch favourites, why not do something a little different and try a brunch burrito?

That cheesy, creamy queso sauce looks like the perfect partner to the flavour packed chorizo sausage.

Share your favourite sausage recipes in the comments, and we’ll see you again next week!

  1. I think there is a case to be made for a brunch Toad in the hole – after all its just sausage and pancake mix….thinking about it, maybe with maple syrup instead of the traditional onion gravy?
