Food Porn Friday – Episode 25: Back To School

Autumn is here, boys and girls. Best Brunch Ever is a year old and we’re getting out our knitwear and woolly tights. And although I haven’t had to go to school in September for six years, Amy now works in education (sort of) and is giving me those “brand new school planner, freshly polished shoes, ungraffiti’d pencil case” vibes.

I’ve had a mini obsession with Jamie Oliver’s Family Food Tube since its launch a couple of months ago, mainly because so many of the videos contain small children and easy meals for busy mums. I’m not a busy mum, but I would say that is definitely my kitchen aesthetic. So to demonstrate, here is Jools Oliver preparing overnight oats for Jamie Oliver Jr (he’s actually called Buddy).

If you want a slightly less healthy breakfast to take with you on the school bus, but nonetheless one that will see you through the day, this seems to tick all the boxes:

There are so many of these “fried breakfast cup” kind of recipes on Pinterest and they’re the ones I am both most desperate to try and most afraid will go completely wrong. How do you get the eggs to stay where you want them? I tried to do one of those recipes where you bake an egg inside a jacket potato once and it went badly wrong so I’m very sceptical. In theory, though, delicious.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, oily fish is brain food.

This recipe seems ridiculously easy to do even before school, and it will really get your brain ready to do long division or medieval history or noun declensions or whatever else you have to learn. Promise.

Baked goods at break time will definitely take the edge of those back to school blues, and I’ve found the perfect recipe:

Banana, oats and yoghurt make it sort of healthy, but there’s a decent amount of chocolate chips on top too. You’re welcome.

Everyone knows on your first day back to school you bring an apple for teacher. But we’re a competitive pair at Best Brunch Ever, as well as complete teacher’s pets, so we had to go one better:

Guaranteed to get you A*s all year.

I’ll be back in a fortnight. You’re all terrible ungrateful readers so the next one will be “Carb-Free”, courtesy of my mother, unless someone comes up with a better idea. Consider yourselves warned.
