Food Porn Friday – Episode 24: Sick Bed

I’m sick. August is meant to be a time for frolicking in the sunshine and enjoying the summer lull; I am wrapped up in a duvet marathoning Brooklyn Nine-Nine and mainlining Benylin. My appetite has vanished. I don’t want to write about brunch.

But, here we are. I’ve scoured the internet to find you the best cold-curing brunches. You’re welcome.

Everyone knows the best way to prevent colds is to have a lot of vitamin C. What better way to do this than to just eat a bowl of smushed up fruit?

You can probably taste those berries even with a cold. Also it’s purple. I dunno, what more do you want? It’s not like you can just stop eating and wait for the grim reaper of colds to come for you.

Bowls of things are definitely the way to go when you’re sick. You can have them in bed without spilling them everywhere and runny things are easy to swallow with a sore throat. Porridge is good in this respect.

I’m still mad that Americans call this oatmeal and that if you type “porridge” into pinterest you get all these overnight oats recipes and no proper porridge and GOD don’t they know “overnight” was last fortnight’s theme?! GET WITH THE TIMES.

It’s possible I’m a bit grumpy.

Anyway, banana porridge is great. It does make me feel a little better.

If you have a blocked nose, I recommend something very spicy. Thai Green Curry is good, though not very breakfast-y. However, these baked eggs:

They call them Eggs in Hell and this is the cold from hell so I expect that all balances out… or I’m just in double hell. That sounds terrible.

You know what’s better than eating if you have a cold? Drinking. Especially hot drinks. Fluids and steam, a cold’s best friend. And this is spicy and soothing:

Hot milk is great for a sore throat and spice is good for the sinuses. And ginger fights infection. Possibly. I can’t be bothered to check that so just take my word for it.

Yay! We’re done. I can go back to bed. Please send me ideas for next time, unless I die, which is possible, in which case, goodbye friends.

My Auntie Margaret’s wee remedy was hot lemon juice with honey and a teaspoon of vodka before bed. I found it helped when I got the freshers’ flu of death when I was tech-ing last year.
Hot orange juice with cloves and spices is a favourite with my English relatives when they’re ill, though I don’t know how helpful it is beyond tasting rather festive.
Sending you good thoughts and hope you feel better soon!
